British Intelligence Open-Sources its Large-Scale Graph Database Software

UK's Secretive Spy Agency Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has open-sourced one of its tools on code-sharing website GitHub for free...

A graph database called 'Gaffer.'

Gaffer, written in Java, is a kind of database that makes it "easy to store large-scale graphs in which the nodes and edges have statistics such as counts, histograms and sketches."

Github is a popular coding website that allows software developers to build their project on a single platform equipped with all the requirements that are gone in the making of a software.

Gaffer and its Functionalities

In short, Gaffer is a framework for creating mass-scale databases, to store and represent data, and is said to be useful for tasks including:

  • Allow the creation of graphs with summarised properties within Accumulo with a very less amount of coding.
  • Allow flexibility of stats that describe the entities and edges.
  • Allow easy addition of nodes and edges.
  • Allow quicker retrieval of data on nodes of interest.
  • Deal with data of different security levels – all data has a visibility, which is used to restrict who can access data based on their authorizations.
  • Support automatic age-off of data.
Gaffer actually uses the Apache Accumulo codebase that was originally open-sourced by the US National Security Agency (NSA)and is released under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Why GCHQ Open Sourced its Code?

It's pretty unusual for one of the most secretive intelligence agencies to release computer code online for anyone to use for free.

Because GCHQ is very well known for monitoring communications worldwide and is not at all expected to release its database types open source on GitHub.

However, maybe this GCHQ's move is part of its effort toward becoming friendlier in the hacker community and to attract new talents.

The spy agency also says that it is already started working on Gaffer2, a project the agency aims to take "the best parts of Gaffer... to create a more general purpose graph database system."

What do you think about this GCHQ's move? Feel free to tell us by hitting the comments below.

Hacker Confirms PlayStation 4 Jailbreak! Exploit Could Open Doors for Pirated Games

Sony's PlayStation 4 – the hottest-selling gaming console in the United States – has been in the market for a while now, and since its release, hackers have been tinkering with it to find a way to run unauthorized software.

Though breaking the protection on PlayStation 4 is a huge deal, a hacker who calls himself CTurt has claimed to develop a fully jailbroken version of the PlayStation 4 with the help of a kernel exploit that he previously created.

The current jailbreak allows dumping of the system RAM from other processes and installing custom firmware that can be used to run homebrew applications that aren't approved by Sony.

Of course, there is still a few other security issues to get by, but it is a foot in the door for game piracy, which can affect the gaming market as a whole.

The Twitter account of CTurt seems toindicate that currently the exploit only works for PlayStation 4 firmware version 1.76, but apparently it can be tweaked to work for more recent firmware.

CTurt successfully managed to take advantage of an exploit in PlayStation 4 v1.76 to inject an external code in the system, thereby taking control of the hardware.

Sony would certainly be unhappy with the launch of PlayStation 4 jailbreak and would be trying hard to eliminate any vulnerabilities for the most recent version of PS4 firmware.

How Hackers Use Your IP Address to Hack Your Computer

Your IP (Internet Protocol) address is your unique ID on the internet. It’s synonymous with your home address. Anyone in the world can contact your computer through its IP address, and send a retrieve information with it.
I’m sure at one time or another you’ve heard that hackers can hack your computer via your IP address. This is one of the reasons proxies and anonymity services exist, to protect people from learning your IP address. So how are hackers using just an address to get into your computer and make your life hell?
Open ports. Your computer runs services like media sharing on what are called ports. A port is just an opening that a service uses as a communications endpoint. There are 65,535 total allocated ports in TCP/UDP. To exploit a service on a port, a hacker would banner grabfor the software and version. After they learn that information, they would search sites likePacket Storm for known exploits to run against the service.
Today’s Null Byte is going to demonstrate a simple “port scan” on local computer using Nmap, and teach how a hacker would exploit these services, as well as how to guard ourselves against it. This will be done under Linux, but Nmap is available for all platforms. If you can’t figure out how to install it in Windows with the GUI installer (yeah, right), follow along using Cygwin.

Social Engineering Attacks Through Facebook

Step 1 Download & Install Nmap

Bold words are commands that must be entered in a terminal emulator.
First, we must download Nmap, which is going to be our tool that we use for port scanning and information gathering:
wget http://nmap.org/dist/nmap-5.51.tar.bz2
Now, extract the archive:
tar -zxvf nmap-5.51.tar.bz2
Change to the newly made directory:
cd <directory name>
This is the standard installation procedure:
./configure
make && sudo make install
Nmap should now be installed!

Find and Exploit a Vulnerability in Website, Step by Step

Step 2 Scan for a Target

Let’s scan a local computer. I’m going to use a website as an example, rather than a local computer. This is because my firewall is absolutely crazy, and filters out scans. Don’t scan a remote computer with the intentions of doing bad deeds. This is for educational purposes only.
Start by mapping out your local network:
sudo nmap -sP 192.168.1.0/24
That should return a list of hosts that are up for a port scan!
How Hackers Use Your IP Address to Hack Your Computer

Step 3 Scan Your Individual Target

Out of the returned list of targets, pick one that you would like to scan for services. Let’s do a full scan of all the TCP/UDP ports:
sudo nmap -p 1-65535 -T4 -A -v <target IP goes here>

You should get something that looks like the following image:
How Hackers Use Your IP Address to Hack Your Computer

As you can see, this target has MANY open ports. SSH piques my interest, so let’s move on to banner grabbing to learn the software version or our choice of service.

Step 4 Banner Grabbing

For this, you can use the regular ol’ telnet client. Telnet comes with Windows and most Linux distros:
telnet <host IP> <port banner to grab>
From this, I would learn which software version the service is running, then see if I can find a way to exploit it.

How Can I Protect Myself?

Luck for all of you lovely people, I recently made a tutorial on iptables, which will filter out unwanted connections. Also, disable any unnecessary programs that connect to the internet (remote administration, media sharing, etc).
Windows users, install Comodo firewall, it’s incredible and uses a simple point and click installation, and will filter ports for you. It has great default settings and it is free.

FACEBOOK BOSS PROMISES TO SUPPORT MUSLIMS ON SOCIAL NETWORK
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered words of support Dec. 9, 2015 for Muslims who fear retaliation for the recent violent attacks by Islamic extremists. (KGO-TV )
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is offering words of support for Muslims who fear retaliation for the recent violent attacks by Islamic extremists in Paris and San Bernardino.

In the wake of those attacks, Zuckerberg wrote on his personal Facebook page Wednesday that he wants to assure Muslims they are welcome on Facebook and that "we will fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you."

I want to add my voice in support of Muslims in our community and around the world.
After the Paris attacks and hate this week, I can only imagine the fear Muslims feel that they will be persecuted for the actions of others.
As a Jew, my parents taught me that we must stand up against attacks on all communities. Even if an attack isn't against you… More

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has proposed barring all Muslims from entering the United States. Other political leaders have condemned Trump's proposal as discriminatory.

Zuckerberg did not refer specifically to any proposal, but the co-founder of the world's biggest social network said, "As a Jew, my parents taught me that we must stand up against attacks on all communities."

Flickr VR Lets You View Thousands Of 360-Degree Photos On Samsung Gear VR

Flickr has rolled out a new app on the Samsung Gear VR, letting users immerse themselves into 360-degree photos in virtual reality.

The company has a library of over 14,000 equirectangular images, ranging from the Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River to the Aurora Borealis.
(Photo : Peter Macdiarmid | Getty Images)&nbsp Flickr launches a new app on the Samsung Gear VR, allowing users to immerse themselves into the 360-degree photos that the image repository has to offer. &nbsp The Flickr community has uploaded tens of thousands of 360-degree photos, where the current library consists of more than 14,000 "equirectangular" images.

With the new app, the company simply gives users the ability to dive into those images and feel like they're transported to someplace else at a tap of a button. &nbsp Needless to say, the app requires a Samsung handset that's compatible with the Gear VR, including the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5. &nbsp According to the company, it sets itself apart from others because it preserves the quality of uploaded images, making it the "best platform for 360-degree photos."
"[W]e respect the image quality of uploaded photos, and we want to be one of the best ways to access engaging virtual reality experiences," Flickr says&nbsp When the Flickr app is opened, it will bring up a carousel of the top-curated 360-degree photos. Users will be able to choose from an assortment of images, taking their pick of choice of which time or place they'd like to be transported to — not in the literal sense, of course, but one of the closest ways to do so by far.

To get a better idea of how the 360-degree images would look like, explore the selection of VR photos on Flickr's dedicated VR page, ranging from the Aurora Borealis to the Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River. &nbsp Just recently, Samsung rolled out a web browser for the Gear VR, calling itSamsung Internet for Gear VR.

With all the VR apps coming to the headset, it seems that the South Korea-based company is really stepping up its game in the virtual reality scene. &nbsp The new Flickr app for the Samsung Gear VR is now available for download on the Oculus Store.

With the presence of the cloud, and all the services which have sprung up to offer something to consumers looking to store their files for easy access on the go or from anywhere, it’s truly never been simpler to make sure you always have what you need on hand from documents, to pictures to videos and more. Perhaps the only downside is that sometimes it may be more difficult than some have imagined to actually find what they’ve been keeping in the cloud. Google has tried to rectify this with the latest updateto Google Drive in which they emphasize that it has to “be super easy to find your files.”
If you’re someone who has never really had an issue with this sort of thing, then consider this a beneficial update that will just make things a little more convenient. For anyone else who has truly gone through the day to day struggle of hunting and pecking for that one file you stored inGoogle Drive a month ago, this is likely to be a very exciting set of improvements. Among the changes, Google has made it possible to search for the specific files or file types that users are looking for by simply typing that search query in the search bar. This is something that is available across all platforms on which Drive is accessible, and this is also where users can now find the advanced search options if they need them.
Google boasts that these changes to make searching for files a simpler process also makes searching for what you want or need a much faster process too, so all in all, this should be a pretty noticeable improvement to the user experience of the service, no matter where you tend to use it the most. If you share files with other users, those people can now search for that shared file with filters of the original owners name or email address. This update may begin to start showing for some users across the varied available platforms, but Google also states that the rollout will happen over the coming weeks so it may still be a little bit before everyone has access to these changes.

Bitcoin creator 'is 44-year-old Australian', claims Wired

You may remember Newsweek creating headlines around the world when it "outed" the creator of digital currency Bitcoin as being a 64-year-old Japanese American living near Los Angeles.
The magazine said it had found the mysterious "Satoshi Nakamoto", the man whose name has been linked with the creation of the currency.
That "scoop" apparently proved false - Dorian Nakamoto (birth name Satoshi) ended up suing Newsweek after he said his life was turned completely upside down.
And so it is with that rigmarole still fresh in our minds that I tentatively offer this article from Wired which says Bitcoin creator "Satoshi Nakamoto" is a pseudonym used by a 44-year-oldAustralian cryptologist named Craig Steven Wright.
"Either Wright invented bitcoin," Wired's Andy Greenberg and Gwen Branwen write, "Or he's a brilliant hoaxer who very badly wants us to believe he did."
Bitcoin is a virtual currency built around a complicated cryptographic protocol and a global network of computers that oversees and verifies which coins have been spent by whom. Its anonymous nature means it is a popular choice for criminal activity as it is extremely difficult to trace who is spending Bitcoin.
The currency's creator (or creators, perhaps) is proving just as difficult to trace.
Wired cite leaked documents it says shows communication between Dr Wright and his lawyers in which he is reported to have said: "I did my best to try and hide the fact that I've been running Bitcoin since 2009.
"By the end of this I think half the world is going to bloody know."
I've tried to reach Dr Wright, but to no avail. His blog was taken offline shortly after Wired published its report, while Dr Wright's Twitter account went from being protected to being deleted altogether.
According to the online profiles that remain online, he runs DeMorgan Ltd, a Sydney-based company that looks at "alternative currency".
For the full break down of Wired's body of research into Dr Wright, I urge you to read their full article. But it can be summed up as:
- Blog posts apparently published well before the launch of Bitcoin sharing and seeking expertise on creating cryptocurrencies.
- A request for people to email him details by using an encrypted key previously linked to someone identifying themselves as being Satoshi Nakamoto.
- A post announcing the launch of Bitcoin that was later deleted and replaced with a note saying "the best way to hide is right in the open".
Furthermore, leaked emails and transcripts back up what the magazine says - pointing to Dr Wright having huge stashes of Bitcoins, which he among other things used to invest in setting up a Bitcoin bank.
But, and it's a big but, Wired is quick to pre-emptively point out the potential holes in its theory - saying it could be a very elaborate hoax.
"The unverified leaked documents could have been faked in whole or in part," the magazine said.
But later adds: "But this much is clear: If Wright is seeking to fake his Nakamoto connection, his hoax would be practically as ambitious as bitcoin itself."
The body of evidence presented is certainly compelling, and fills in many of the holes not covered by other supposed outings of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, who is fast becoming something of a Lord Lucan for the digital world.
